Author Ilchi Lee has a very personal relationship with the earth that goes beyond its physical make-up. He has encountered the soul of the earth, which he calls Mago after an ancient Korean Mother Earth figure. “I am not a geologist familiar with all the wonderful details of Earth’s makeup, nor am I an ardent environmental activist courageous enough to stand in front of and block bulldozers from removing trees. But I am deeply aware that I exist only because the Earth exists. I am someone who feels the Earth’s energy and soul. I feel the sadness and grief that the Earth feels as she watches her children destroy themselves along with her. I feel the Earth’s soul quiver, not with fear and anger at the destruction wrought by humanity, but with the concern and love that she holds for all of life in her bosom. I write this book to share the soul of the Earth as I feel her every day.”
Ilchi Lee believes Mago’s dream of a healthy and peaceful planet is possible when all people recognize our dependence on the earth's abundance as an essential common bond we share. He elaborates on this concept further in his short work, Earth Citizen: Recovering Our Humanity In it he asks you to shed old identities that are illusionary and divisive, and to take on a new identity—that of an Earth Citizen. It is through this simple shift in self-identification that he thinks the world can find the answers to its many complex problems.
Lee contends that while the cultures of the world may remain diverse, we are all united by our dependence on a single planet—the Earth. For this reason, he says we must all find a way to place the Earth at the center of our personal value systems. It is only by realizing our common humanity through the Earth that we may come together as one to create a peaceful and sustainable way of life on the planet.
